Solar battery rebates and incentives in Perth, WA

Perth homeowners can currently claim two rebates on the same battery, one from the Australian Government and one from the WA Government. There is also a no-interest loan for eligible households.

1. Federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program

• Started on 1 July 2025. It gives a discount of around 30% on the upfront cost of an eligible battery (5 kWh to 100 kWh) connected to new or existing rooftop solar.
• The discount comes off your quote. Your installer applies it for you, so there is no cashback to claim.
• It is not means-tested. Eligible households qualify regardless of income.
• Since 1 May 2026, the first 14 kWh of battery gets the full rebate, the next 14 kWh (14 to 28 kWh) gets 60%, and the next 22 kWh (28 to 50 kWh) gets 15%. Capacity above 50 kWh gets no extra rebate.
• The rebate is based on your installation date and is reducing every six months until 2030. Installing sooner means a higher rebate.

2. WA Residential Battery Scheme

• Synergy customers (Perth metro and the south-west) can get up to $1,300 off.
• Horizon Power customers (regional WA) can get up to $3,800 off.
• The maximum amounts are based on a 10 kWh battery. Larger batteries can still get the full amount.
• You can claim it on top of the federal rebate.
• It is available for new solar and battery systems, or for adding a battery to solar you already have. Batteries installed before 1 July 2025 are not eligible.
• The scheme covers up to 100,000 rebates and is expected to run until 2027 or until the funding is used.

3. No-interest loan

• Eligible households can borrow up to $10,000 with no interest, repaid over up to 10 years.
• It is for households with a combined income under $210,000, and it is separate from the rebate.

What is a Virtual Power Plant (VPP)?

To get the WA rebate, your battery must join a VPP. This means your battery can share some stored energy with the grid when demand is high, and you get credit for every kWh it sends. Terms depend on your provider, so our team can explain them before you decide.

Are you eligible?

In general, you can apply if you:

• Live in Western Australia and are 18 or older
• Are an Australian permanent resident
• Are a Synergy or Horizon Power customer
• Own a standalone home, or a unit-titled property with the approvals you need
• Have (or are installing) a grid-connected solar system
• Choose a battery on the approved list for your area and have it installed by an accredited installer

New WA installation rules from 1 May 2026

All new and upgraded solar and battery systems in the Perth area (the South West Interconnected System) must now meet Western Power’s technical standards. In simple terms, your electricity retailer must be able to remotely connect and disconnect your system if needed. Systems that do not meet this may have exports limited to 1.5 kW. Systems installed before 1 May 2026 do not need to change. We will make sure your new system meets the current rules.

What size battery do I need?

The best size depends on how much power you use, especially in the evening, and how much solar you make. Because the federal rebate is highest for the first 14 kWh, a battery around that size is often the best value for a typical household.
